How to play: Brisca

A trick-taking game with the 40-card Spanish deck, for 2 players or 4 in pairs (partners sit opposite). Whoever scores more than 60 of the 120 points wins the hand.

  1. Everyone gets 3 cards and the card that sets the trump suit is placed face up under the deck.
  2. Each player plays one card per turn. You don’t have to follow suit: play whatever you like.
  3. The highest trump takes the trick; if there’s no trump, the highest card of the suit led. Order: Ace, 3, King, Knight, Jack, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2.
  4. Points: Ace 11, Three 10, King 4, Knight 3, Jack 2; the rest are worth nothing.
  5. Whoever wins the trick draws first and leads the next one. The last card of the deck is the trump card on the table.
  6. Whoever holds the 7 of trumps can swap it, on their turn, for the trump card on the table if it’s a face card, the 3 or the ace (while the deck lasts).

Tips and options

  • Ranked: a table of 4 in pairs with the standard rules; if people are missing, bots of your level fill the seats. In a room with friends you choose the rules and it doesn’t count for Elo.
  • Points stay hidden until the end of the hand, like at a real table: count them from memory!
  • With 4 players you can signal your partner from the panel… but the whole table sees it.
  • Host options: a single hand or a game to 2, 3 or 5 hands, and time per turn. A 60–60 tie doesn’t count: another hand is played.
  • If someone leaves, their partner loses the game. If your time runs out, your cheapest card is played.

Trumps, aces and threes: take more than 60 points.
